A Sweet Friendship Refreshes the Soul

I’m writing this from my air-conditioned living room—freshly showered, takeout on the way, and so grateful to be home after a full weekend of travel.

I just spent the last few days in Madison celebrating one of my best friends at her bachelorette party. In all honesty, the lead-up to the trip came with more than a little anxiety. Mostly social anxiety.

What if I need to step away for a moment to breathe? What if I panic in front of people? What if my brain gets too overwhelmed?

But the minute I arrived, something in me shifted. I’m calling it “connected mode.” I started chatting with friends, easing into conversations, and saying yes to the plans. We spent the day wandering the city in flowy ’60s and ’70s-inspired outfits, listening to live music for Make Music Madison. Even with the 90+ degree heat, I was surprised by how good I felt. How much I was enjoying myself. How quiet my anxiety had become.

Over the past few weeks off social media, I’ve been noticing a few things. Most days, I don’t miss it at all. The only time I catch myself reaching for it is when I’m overwhelmed and trying to numb out. But when I’m with people I love? I barely even think about my phone.

The truth is, social media doesn’t feel all that “connecting” for me right now. Sure, it’s helpful for coordinating, checking in, or sharing moments in real time—but it’s no substitute for face-to-face connection or long conversations with the people who know you best.

On the drive home, I kept thinking about how much lighter I felt after the weekend. How grounded. How recharged.

It reminded me of a proverb I love: “A sweet friendship refreshes the soul.” And after this weekend, I believe that more than ever.

Final Thought
When’s the last time you felt that kind of soul-refreshing connection? What friendships feel like a deep exhale for you?

This might be your gentle nudge to reach out—call a friend, write a note, maybe even send a little snail mail. A few heartfelt words can go a long way, for both of you.
